Robert Walker stars in this lively screen adaptation of Marion Hargrove's memoirs of life in boot camp. Walker plays Hargrove, a bumbling cub reporter who makes his editor crazy. When WW II breaks out, he finds himself in the Army, driving his commanders up the wall and doing a lot of KP duty. The goofy soldier sells a huckster (Keenan Wynn) a percentage of his future earnings as a writer to raise enough money to visit his girl friend (Donna Reed) in New York. This pleasant, well-cast wartime comedy originally had a fairly serious ending because the studio feared presenting a too-flip view of WW II. Preview audiences disapproved of the mixture of seriousness and comedy, however, and the studio reconsidered. Since director Wesley Ruggles was engaged on a project in London, Tay Garnett was designated to direct a new upbeat, comic ending. The film's success resulted in a sequel the next year, WHAT NEXT, CORPORAL HARGROVE? Film director Blake Edwards (S.O.B., VICTOR/VICTORIA) can be seen in a bit role as a field operator. leave a comment
