When a noted psychiatrist is found dead from a supposedly self-inflicted gunshot wound, his patient, Boyd, a TV commentator, suspects foul play. He obtains a list of patients from Franklin, the dead man's 14-year-old daughter. Boyd visits each patient on the list in his search for the murderer, but learns only that each person has a secret life known only to the psychiatrist. Then he stumbles across the files on another patient, one not on the list, who turns out to be Franklin. She confesses to the murder which she committed because her father was about to send her to an institution to be treated for her schizophrenia. The crime is reenacted, and Franklin stabs Boyd. He recovers and visits her at the institution, promising to remain her friend. The episodic, talky drama has some moments that overcome the script's deficiencies, but the film tends to be pretentious and deliberately obtuse. The performances are only adequate. Franklin is particularly good, however, as the troubled young girl. An additional sequence, featuring Patricia Neal, was filmed but was subsequently cut from the final version. leave a comment
