Animation has fallen from its glory days of Walt Disney and Chuck Jones, and today it often seems like a commercial dumping ground for filmmakers with little respect for youthful audiences beyond their power as consumers. THE SECRET OF THE SWORD is another offshoot of the popular "Masters of the Universe" line of toys, which has inspired everything from comic books to T-shirts to an animated television series. This feature is an extension of the latter, using many of the simplistic animation techniques that have become the accepted standard for the tube. The story involves the adventures of He-Man (voiced by John Erwin), a muscular blond sword-and-sorcery type, as he searches for his sister She-Ra (voiced by Melendy Britt). The evil ruler Hordak (voiced by George Dicenzo) has kidnaped her, and naturally our hero is out to save the day. Indistinguishable from any of the He-Man TV episodes or videocassettes in any aspect other than length, which is probably a moot point at best. This is a ground-out effort designed to please the calculated expectations of He-Man's loyal audiences. leave a comment
