Alan Rudolph's 2003 chronicle of an apparently solid marriage unraveling at its almost imperceptibly frayed edges gets off to a deceptively low-key start and ends up a surreal, hallucinatory fever dream of betrayal and retribution. Placid suburban dentist David Hurst (Campbell Scott) becomes convinced that his restless wife and fellow dentist, Dana (Hope Davis), is cheating on him. Denis Leary steals the show as a spectacularly disagreeable patient, a scruffy, bilious jazz trumpeter in a sleazy snakeskin jacket who poisons David's mind with world's worst marital advice.
