SEARCHERS, THE
starstarstarstarstar
Director John Ford's masterpiece, and the ultimate cult film for the New Hollywood: It's quoted and alluded to in films as diverse as Taxi Driver, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Wars. John Wayne gives the performance of his career as a mysterious Civil War veteran on an obsessive, seven-year search for a niece (Natalie Wood) who's been abducted by a local Comanche tribe. With complex insights into its characters and an unusually sympathetic portrayal of Native Americans, the film is a deeply emotional experience and a work of stunning beauty: If you had to pick a single frame from any movie that would sum up everything the American Western was about, it would have to come from The Searchers.
