When a damaged vessel is found floating off the coast of Newfoundland, fisherman Andrews thinks he is doing the honorable thing by towing the boat ashore so it can be repaired. But he catches a glimpse of the cargo the ship is carrying, namely torpedos and other war materials, and correctly supposes the boat is actually a supplier for Nazi U-boats hiding off the coast. It then becomes Andrews' duty to design a method of sinking the boat without destroying the entire fishing village. Overcoming the obstacles of a Nazi spy among his own crew and a female hostage held by Rains (the skipper of the German boat), Andrews inventively destroys the ship, adding his small part in the fight against his country's enemy. Director Werker seems more comfortable with action scenes, particularly when the German boat is blown up, than in handling drama, though Rains, and to a point Andrews, still give convincing portrayals. This was the first production under RKO head Samuel Bischoff. leave a comment
