Bill Murray's first film in four years (excluding his cameo in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS), this only partly successful comedy updates Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Murray takes on the Scrooge role as Frank Cross, the youngest network executive in television history and a mean-spirited, wise-cracking creep. As Christmas draws near, he personally supervises "Scrooge," a $40 million production of the Dickens' classic. Murray is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past (David Johansen), Present (Carol Kane), and the high-tech Future, who transport him back and forth through time in a series of eye-opening scenes designed to soften him and threaten him into humanity. Scripted by veteran "Saturday Night Live" writers Mitch Glazer and Michael O'Donoghue, SCROOGED plays like a series of extended sketches from that program although a dark undercurrent runs through the proceedings. Neither SCROOGED nor Murray, who is front and center throughout, is particularly funny. A number of talented actors appear, but only a few are able to make much of a mark given their limited screentime. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Makeup. leave a comment
