Browbeaten by his fiancee and his papa alike, health food executive Bernardo Puccini (Ezio Greggio) welcomes his upcoming mission to America. From his sickbed, Bernardo's father Guido (Gianfranco Barra) has requested that Bernardo locate Jake Gordon (Mel Brooks), the GI who saved his life during World War II. Bernardo's search leads to the Bernheimer Institute, where Jake's been a mental patient for the last half a century! After Bernardo facilitates Jake's escape, the old timer's psychiatrist, Dr. Collier (Julie Condra), pursues the fugitives back to Europe. Eccentric but resourceful, Jake gives Bernardo the slip and has a ball in Monte Carlo. Meanwhile, Bernardo gets arrested for disturbing topless sunbathers. After catching up with Jake, Bernardo hides out with him in a local monastery. Although Dr. Collier convinces gendarmes to apprehend Bernardo and Jake, Bernardo gets her to grant Guido's wish. But why is Guido so intent on a reunion with Jake after fifty years? This foolish hodgepodge introduces Italian funnyman Ezio Greggio to American audiences, but anyone expecting the next Roberto Benigni will be sorely disappointed. To put it politely, Greggio doesn't translate. Fortunately, Brooks doesn't need translation, and he's the film's one saving grace. To watch him belt out "Toot, Toot, Tootsie," is to see the show biz tradition of selling a song reduced to rubble, but the tired dialogue he's given is another story altogether; one gets the feeling that Bob Hope's retired gag writers have been taken out of mothballs. As far as the physical comedy goes, the lame screenplay has Jake slipping out of Bernardo's custody ad nauseam. Only one scene is truly funny: When Bernardo and Jake hole up inside the monastary, its holy denizens, famous for their collective vow of silence, wind up spouting obscenities at the interlopers. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
