An abundance of pontificating on the necessity of reform hampers this tale of a young girl, Fox, who, though innocent, gets sent to reform school. When Mr. Right--Kelly--comes along, he gets her paroled and follows with the usual marriage proposal. An ancillary plot deals with cruel headmatron La Verne and her murder by inmate-sympathizing assistant Wilson, with the appropriate police investigation. This was one of a number of films of the time which capitalized on the success of the German-made MAEDCHEN IN UNIFORM (1932). The formula of nubile adolescent girls within difficult institutional settings appeared to be a great draw for a secretly concupiscent public when combined with a conscience-salving message of social reform. The trend continued with a succession of women's prison pictures. leave a comment
