Schlock

1973, Movie, PG, 77 mins

starstarstarstar
Completed in 1971, SCHLOCK was the feature debut of John Landis and remains one of his more interesting pictures. A sometimes hilarious, but more often merely silly spoof of science-fiction and horror films of the 1950s, the film contains plenty of cameos horror buffs will appreciate, including Forrest J. Ackerman, Jack Harris, and John Chambers. Twenty-two-year-old Landis himself stars, dressed in an ape suit, as a 20-million-year-old missing link known as Schlockthropus. He wanders around town, goes to see monster movies, and kills several people, leaving a trail of banana peels. He is befriended by a blind girl who thinks he's a dog--that is, until she regains her sight. The makeup was done by Rick Baker, who would go on to save Landis' AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON from being a total washout. Out on videotape as THE BANANA MONSTER. leave a comment
