In an odyssey redolent of such classics as "Don Quixote" or "Jacques le Fataliste," an Italian army captain, Gassman, blinded in an accidental explosion during maneuvers, journeys to Turin, Genoa, Rome, and Naples with his army-assigned Sancho Panza, Momo. Proud, arrogant, and aristocratic, the blinded captain turns hyperaesthetic with his handicap; his short-term mission is the seduction and subjection of beautiful women. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and he is eyeless in these oases of pulchritude. Momo, his seeing-eye private, must describe to him the physical attractions of the women he meets. His other senses sharpened, the captain is suspicious of his temporary aide's judgments in such matters; he can, he attests, smell a beautiful woman. In each of the cities they visit, such women prove to be most receptive to the handsome, handicapped hero; his vanity much assuaged by his encounters, the journey turns almost delightful. But fulfillment to Gassman is something entirely different, as one might be led to suspect from the items in his travelling case: a pistol and a portrait of a woman. The tour is to end in Naples, after all: "See Naples and die." Too proud to pursue the woman of the portrait because of his handicap, Gassman has arranged to meet a similarly wounded fellow officer at this terminal town; their object: mutual suicide. Well acted and extremely entertaining. Gassman won the Best Actor prize at Cannes in 1975 for his portrayal of the capricious captain, and Allan's screenplay earned an Oscar nomination.
