A gritty story of a young girl, Ruby Star (Jennifer Mayo), forced to hit the streets and resort to prostitution to cover her rent and support her infant child. She is befriended by a seemingly decent pimp, Easy (David Dean), but is soon caught in a whirlwind of seedy characters before finally separating herself from that crowd. If SCARRED had been shot in the typical exploitative way, then it would easily be forgotten, but the cinema-verite style adds a certain frightening potency to the picture. It was begun by writer-director Marie Turko while a student at UCLA and finished with the help of American Film Institute and National Endowment for the Arts grants. leave a comment
