Basically a remake of the successful Bob Hope vehicle, THE GHOST BREAKERS, made in 1940, the scripters reworked the original to allow a part for Carmen Miranda and a walk-on bit for Hope and Bing Crosby. Lewis and Martin play their usual roles: Martin as the sly ladies' man and Lewis as the nincompoop sidekick around to carry the laughs, which he does somewhat successfully. Lewis' most memorable moment comes in his Carmen Miranda imitation in which he squeaks out a rendition of "Mamie." Martin gets in trouble with the mob after he is pursued by Malone, a gangster's girl friend. The duo goes with heiress Scott to the desert island she has just inherited which houses a large old castle that is supposedly haunted. In reality, villain Ching just wants it to appear haunted to scare off the new owners to provide free access to the gold that lies there. Songs include: "San Domingo," "Song of the Enchilada Man" (Jerry Livingston, Mack David; sung by Martin, Lewis, Miranda), "Mama Yo Quiero" (Al Stillman, Jarca and Vincente Paiva; mimed by Lewis to a Miranda recording), "You Hit the Spot" (Mack Gordon, Harry Revel), "I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine" (David; sung by Martin), "I'm Your Pal" (David, Livingston), "When Somebody Thinks You're Wonderful" (Harry Woods). leave a comment
