Guinness plays a dual role as an English teacher visiting France and a wealthy French count. The count's family of crazed eccentrics includes Davis as his mother, a bed-ridden morphine addict. When Guinness as the count comes across the schoolteacher, he convinces the latter to take on his identity. This allows the count to go through with a scheme to murder his wife, Worth, and run off with his Italian mistress, Maurey. The deception fools almost everyone, including Davis, but not Maurey. After Worth is murdered, the count intends to do away with his double. But a deliberately confusing ending has what appears to be the English teacher running off with Maurey, who is equally unsure of her partner's true identity. Guinness was convincing in both portrayals, as was Davis in her role. But the script unfortunately does a poor job of determining motivation and developing plot. leave a comment
