Say Nothing: Review
A repentant adulteress is pitted against a vengeful swain in this thriller which, true to its title, has very little to say. Unemployed advertising executive Matt Needham (Hart Bochner) complains constantly about his inability to land a suitable position and neglects his hard-working wife, Grace (Nastassja Kinski), preferring to wallow in alcohol and self-pity. Concerned friends offer the Needhams an all-expense-paid second honeymoon, but Matt refuses their "charity." The fed-up Grace, however, leaves Matt with their young daughter and flies solo to Miami. There she meets seductive high-roller Julian Banks (William Baldwin), who sweet talks her into a fling. Julian makes a point of running into Grace in her hometown, never letting on that he has his own shady motives: He gets his kicks breaking up marriages. Matt lands a swell new job and, to Grace's horror, Julian is his new boss. Matt sobers up and proves himself an invaluable asset to Julian's firm; with her marriage back on track, Grace hesitates to undermine Matt's self-esteem by revealing her infidelity. Grace eventually comes clean, but Julian flatters Matt into remaining in his employ. Julian then pays Grace's babysitter to abandon her charge while Grace attends a business dinner, and the ensuing charges of child neglect drive a wedge between Grace and gullible Matt. Grace discovers that Julian new all about her precarious marriage before they met in Miami; in fact, he followed her there for the express purpose of seducing her. Grace goes on the offensive, but even after learning that Julian's wife died under mysterious circumstances, she has a tough time convincing Matt just how low Julian will go. Grace may have to humble Julian all by herself. No-one ever gets away with infidelity in FATAL ATTRACTION (1987) clones like this straightforward thriller, which focuses on the drab, victimized couple rather than the villain's head trips. That mistake turns sizzle into fizzle.
