A broad comedy about two buddies trying to stop their best childhood friend from marrying a harpy. Starry-eyed romantic Darren Silverman (Jason Biggs) is convinced there's a one-and-only for everyone. Sadly, Darren believes he let his one-and-only, Sandy Perkus (Amanda Detmer), slip through his fingers back in high school. Then along comes Judith (Amanda Peet), a stunner who wraps him so tightly around her finger it's a wonder his feet don't turn blue. Even the reappearance of Sandy, single and sweet as ever, isn't enough to break Judith's stranglehold. Controlling, possessive, selfish and just plain mean, Judith makes Darren change his appearance, wait on her hand and foot, and blow off with his oldest friends, Wayne (Steve Zahn) and J.D. (Jack Black). So Wayne and J.D. kidnap Judith and fake her death, hoping Darren and Sandy will get back together before they have to let her go. Need it be said that their plan goes terribly wrong? Not only does Judith keep escaping, but Sandy is planning to become a nun; romance takes a backseat to her impending final vows. The movie's comic highlight is the amiable Wayne — who runs a rinky-dink pest control business — getting bested by an angry raccoon. But the humor mostly runs to gay jokes and vulgar, stupid gags involving a fat guy's butt crack and boxing nuns. And there's something just not very funny about the sight of a woman bound to a chair in the basement of a ramshackle house, watched via closed-circuit TV by a couple of sex-obsessed misfits. Even if she is Amanda Peet, has the meanest little eyes this side of Cujo, and looks as if her jaw unhinges. Neil Diamond makes a funny cameo appearance that's ostensibly motivated by Wayne, J.D. and Darren's fandom. Their devotion seems as contrived and unbelievable as everything else in this witless comedy. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
