Jennie Lee (Justine Bateman) is an orphan and high school honor student who dreams of a career in rock 'n' roll. During the summer after her graduation, she and her band head for the seaside where they are hired as the house band in a beach club. Over the course of the summer, the band members are forced to deal with drugs, rich snobs, success, and Bateman's love for the much older club owner (Liam Neeson). Strangely, this film starts out as something of a depiction of rebellious, alienated teens, then quickly degenerates into a silly immitation of a 60s "Beach Party" movie. Irish-born Neeson is good, but that only serves to highlight the ineptitude of those around him. Playing the fiery Jennie Lee proves too much of a stretch for Bateman in her first screen role after years of playing the airhead daughter on TV's "Family Ties." Julia Roberts makes her film debut as a band member who gets involved with a cretinous yuppie. The film attempts to pay tribute to vintage rock music--most of the songs are covers of golden oldies. But the renditions are so uninspired, the tribute falls flat. leave a comment
