This lush period piece garnished with lavish costumes and luxurious settings tells the story of a doomed romance between Greenwood and Granger. Forced into a marriage with a young prince, who soon becomes King George I of England, Greenwood leads a life of romantic disillusionment. Her heart is healed, however, when she falls in love with Granger, a Swedish count. Their plans to flee are overheard by Robson, a jealous countess who is also Granger's former mistress. Robson informs the king of Greenwood's plan, and Granger is soon found dead. The film ends on a somber note as Greenwood is sent to a remote castle to live a life of brokenhearted isolation. For fans of this sort of spectacle, SARABAND is one that will border on a teary-eyed experience. Ealing Studios, best known for its superb comedies, attempted to broaden its image with SARABAND. Not only is the film an exercise in romanticism, it is also the studio's first color film. leave a comment
