A classic of Japanese and world cinema, SANSHO THE BAILIFF, set in the 11th century, tells the story of Zushio (Yoshiaki Hanayagi) and his struggle within the limits of feudal society. The film begins as family members--mother Tamaki (Kinuyo Tanaka), sister Anju (Kyoko Kagawa), and Zushio--travel through the woods in search of their exiled patriarch. They are soon assaulted by kidnappers, and Tamaki is sold into prostitution and exiled to Sado Island, while the children are sold as slaves to a powerful and cruel bailiff, Sansho (Eitaro Shindo). Ten years pass, and Zushio has become as evil as Sansho, for whom he now works as an overseer at a labor compound. Haunted...
