Horton is the father of a good-sized brood in wartime San Diego. He has invented a new collapsible life raft that he believes will help the war effort. While he tries to sell his invention, his daughter, Allbritton, must watch her four younger brothers. She also helps sell the life raft to a research institute owned by Hall, the third richest man in America. SAN DIEGO, I LOVE YOU is a fine comedy with a quality that rises above its B film budget. At its comic heart is Allbritton, a wonderful comic actress. Her performance is a fine combination of wit and charm. (Allbritton had a seven-year contract with Universal, but retired from movies when she married reporter Charles Collingwood.) This was her favorite film of all and for good reason. The film features a fine comic script by producers Fessier and Pagano. In addition to Allbritton's performance the film is filled with excellent supporting players. Horton is a delight as the inventor/high school professor. He has a great chemistry with Blore, the butler who is hired as many times as he is fired. Best of all is a memorable performance by Keaton as a bus driver. His career had gone into a tailspin with the advent of sound, and Keaton had bounced around Hollywood working as part of a comic team with Jimmy Durante and writing gags for the lesser Marx Brothers' film GO WEST. He made a few bit appearances in pictures during the 1940s and this ranks as one of the best. leave a comment
