Based on the exploits of a legendary Japanese hero, SAMURAI stars Toshiro Mifune in a trilogy of films as Miyamoto Musashi, a celebrated swordsman, artist, and teacher who wandered the country, battling his enemies and discovering the secrets of life, in the first half of the 17th century. Aiming to elevate himself from his low caste in a poor village, where he is known as Takeso, to the high status of the powerful samurai warriors, the adventurer is faced with numerous temptations and setbacks, but sticks to his goal and becomes a great samurai by the end. This beautifully photographed color costume epic (Toho Studios' first) is easily accessible to Western audiences, since it is--at least superficially--a western, with swords and samurais instead of rifles and cowboys. Its sweeping visuals and long shots, along with its three-part structure and five-hour length, truly makes this one of cinema's grandest experiences. The American release of Part One, in 1955, gained a special Academy Award. The video release is in three separate cassettes (Part One, 93 minutes; Part Two, 102 minutes; Part Three, 105 minutes) and is in Japanese with English subtitles. leave a comment
