It is the 1870s, and Montgomery is a soldier of fortune who has been sentenced to five years for killing a man in a duel over the man's wife. He's sent to a Spanish penal colony in the Philippines that is run by Roland, a real humanitarian who tries to make the colony of Samar more a model community than a prison.
