The biblical story of King Herod and Salome is by no means new to the screen. But never have the characters and supposed events been so confusing and crassly misrepresented. The screenplay has been freely adapted from Oscar Wilde's play, apparently allowing for the prophet John the Baptist to become Yokanaan, for the emperor's soldiers to drive motorcycles, and for Salome to passionately lust after the prophet. When these inventions are woven into the dull plot, they become laughable attempts at creativity. Herod (Tomas Milian), who has become king by slaying Salome's father and taking her mother Herodias (Pamela Salem) as a wife, now wants Salome (Jo Champa) as his bed partner. He offers her anything she could possibly desire. Her only request is that the prophet Yokanaan (Fabrizio Bentivoglio), kept chained in the dungeon, be slain. Champa has the sensual profile to play a decent Salome, but her speech and movements quickly dispel any enchantment she may possess. Even the supposedly erotic "Dance of the Seven Veils" becomes just a tedious display of flesh, as do all the amateurishly choreographed dances. leave a comment
