Blyth is a young woman with a fervent belief in Saint Anne, the mother of Mary and patron saint of young girls. It seems St. Anne answers all of Blyth's prayers, such as those relating to brother O'Brian's boxing debut, Blyth's romances, and the fight against an alderman who wants to tear down the family home to make room for an apartment complex. Gwenn steals the show as Blyth's grandfather, a man who thought he was dying twenty years prior to the story's commencement. He's kept up the charade for his own amusement and somehow has gotten away with it for two decades. Mathews is fine in a bit part as the priest who's tired of the old man's games. The script has a homey quality to it that works nicely with some good comic moments. But the film occasionally succumbs to sugary sweetness, often overplaying its simplicity. The performances overcome this handicap, however, making SALLY AND SAINT ANNE perhaps better than it should have been. leave a comment
