When this picture is good, it's mildly funny. When it's bad (which is more often the case), it is just abysmal. Gardenia owns a failing department store where son Reiner is his assistant, one who acts like a whipped dog. Other son Arkin left long ago to become a basketball coach. Comer is married to Arkin and wants a child; Arkin wants a winning team, so he adopts black teenager Stewart in an attempt to satisfy both their needs. Nutty uncle Caesar, a WW II veteran, is brought in to burn down the store. Caesar has been told by Gardenia it is a Nazi headquarters in the hope that he will torch the place so they can collect the fire insurance. Basically a picture about totally unlovable people, it misses on many levels; not the least is Arkin's direction. Nepotism reared its head as Arkin employed his wife, Dana. Producer Worth, a former actor, does a small bit, and Rocco gives the most controlled performance. Otherwise, it's as strained as a hernia. leave a comment
