1983, Movie, NR, 101 mins

When an Italian general is killed, counter-intelligence officer Dante Mantucci (Franco Nero) investigates and uncovers a planned fascist overthrow of the Italian government, spearheaded by Leporello (Eli Wallach). Anthony Quinn plays a small part as Bruno Manzini, a rich industry czar who tracks down war criminals. Despite the uniformly talented cast and potentially exciting material, THE SALAMANDER is a suspense film with more laughs than thrills. The dialog is pure hokum delivered in a largely lackluster style. The director previously won an Oscar as best film editor, but fails to score in his new job. The film was initially released in Europe before its American debut, but the producers, realizing what a bomb they had on their hands, sold it to HBO cable television before a limited theatrical release. Originally adapted by Morris West from his own novel and titled THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE, it failed at that time to receive US distribution. leave a comment
