Taking its cue from such films as BOTTLE ROCKET (1996) and PALOOKAVILLE (1995), this crime caper from director Tommy J. La Sorsa makes up in energy and giddy humor what it lacks in originality. The plot is familiar enough. Twenty-four-year old Brooklynite Marco (Micky Blatt) is still living with his mother and has entered his eighth year as a minimum wage employee at a local fish market. His boss, Red (Ray Garvey), is a despotic jerk who delights in tormenting him and who happens to be running a cocaine supply operation on the side. One day, the normally mild-mannered Marco reaches his breaking point and rounds up a team of inept wannabe criminals to pilfer Red’s ill-gotten gains. Complications ensue when the crew carries out their dimwitted plan. The fun of the movie is in the performances — everyone seems to be having a great time, and their enthusiasm is enough to sell a script that, while occasionally funny, is rarely clever. La Sorsa is perhaps the most memorable of the cast in his role as a deadbeat porn fiend living on birthday money from his grandmother. Garvey, a fine character actor, makes Red sufficiently hateful that any crime committed against him seems justified. While not a standout, this movie could mingle with the more notable exemplars of its genre without causing a scandal. leave a comment --Scott Jacobson
