In Singapore circa 1971, Gazzara is an American pimp who tries to become an independent operator. This arouses the anger of the local mobsters who want to put him out of business. He finally knuckles under after heavy pressure and goes to work for an American mobster (played by director Bogdanovich in a good quirky performance). He's forced to photograph an important senator in the arms of a young male prostitute, but eventually Gazzara's conscience catches up with him. The film uses the locations well and Gazzara's performance is an actor's dream. But SAINT JACK never quite becomes the "important" film it seems to aspire to be. The story is told in too meandering a style and the many well-acted characterizations never mesh together. This was Bogdanovich's first film in three years. After a promising early career, he got sidetracked creating films for his various mistresses and trying to recapture dead genres (DAISY MILLER and AT LONG LAST LOVE are massive disappointments considering they were made by the director of THE LAST PICTURE SHOW). SAINT JACK helped Bogdanovich regain his critical strength, but it wasn't until 1985's MASK that he was accepted by the public again. SAINT JACK was produced by Roger Corman, who had given the director his start in 1964 with THE WILD ANGELS. Serving as executive producer was Playboy's Hugh Hefner, which may explain some of the film's unnecessary steamier moments. leave a comment
