Two WW II buddies, Ladd and Cassell, learning that a third friend, Dick, is dying of some disease, decide to keep it a secret from him and show him a good time during his final weeks. To raise some money they agree to fly a shady financier, Carnovsky, out of Shanghai to Saigon for $10,000, no questions asked. While they wait at the airport, Carnovsky's secretary, Lake, shows up, but he is late. When he does arrive, with the police in hot pursuit, Ladd and the others decide it would be best not to get involved so they take off without him, over Lake's protests. She turns out to have a half-million dollars in a briefcase that belongs to Carnovsky, his takings as a war profiteer. Over the Indo-Chinese jungle the plane develops engine trouble and Ladd is forced to crash-land. As the four make their way out of the jungle by boat and ox cart, Dick falls in love with Lake, and Ladd, who doesn't trust her because of her connections to Carnovsky, threatens to turn her over to Adler, a detective who has been following them, unless she pretends to reciprocate Dick's love. Gradually, though, Ladd finds himself falling in love with Lake, a sentiment she returns. Eventually the four reach Saigon and find Carnovsky waiting and wanting his ill-gotten money back. Dick and Cassell are killed in the ensuing gunplay and in a final scene at the cemetery, Lake and Ladd leave the double funerals to begin a life together. The fourth and last teaming of Ladd and Lake--not counting three all-star revues in which they appeared separately, STARSPANGLED RHYTHM (1942), DUFFY'S TAVERN (1945), and VARIETY GIRL (1947)--is nowhere near the quality of the other three, THIS GUN FOR HIRE (1942), THE GLASS KEY (also 1942), and THE BLUE DAHLIA (1946). The plot and dialog were ridiculous and Lake, never any great shakes as an actress, has her deficiencies fully shown off here. Her career came to a grinding halt very soon thereafter. Today she and Ladd are remembered as one of the great love teams of the 1940s, but SAIGON does little to advance that reputation. leave a comment
