Even viewers with little patience for computer-generated creatures should jump a few times during this b-movie that transcends its ludicrous premise and evident budgetary limitations. Financed by millionaire Anthony Bricklin (John Rhys-Davies), ruthless geneticist Catherine Viciy (Vanessa Angel) resurrects a prehistoric sabretooth tiger. Her fossilized DNA project involves accelerated growth hormones and cloning, and both foresee a potential gold mine in the transplant industry's demand for human organs. But the driver transporting their specimen crashes his delivery truck, unleashing the beast, which begins its ravenous reign of terror with the driver. Meanwhile, some Sierra Club trainees are exploring the nearby forest. Catherine wants to recover her sabretooth in one piece, but reluctantly accedes to Bricklin's demand that they hire hunter Bob Thatcher (David Keith). Neither tells Thatcher exactly what he's tracking, and when Catherine spots a female victim at a woodland cabin, she keeps the information to herself. She even disposes of the cell phone so that Thatcher can't send for reinforcements. Having devoured various locals, the Sabertooth divides its attentions between Bricklin's party and the surviving Sierra Clubbers, who must rely on all their wilderness training to avoid becoming tiger snacks. Though Thatcher enlists their help in hunting the sabertooth, the odds are against them. The sabretooth is obviously fake, but director James D.R. Hickox stages its sneak attacks with considerable aplomb. Veteran cast members Rhys-Davies and Angel outshine their younger co-stars, chewing the scenery as vigorously as the prehistoric predator does its unfortunate victims.
