This film, Hitchcock's first contribution to wartime American propaganda, is as polished and suspenseful as any the great director would make. A forerunner to NORTH BY NORTHWEST, SABOTEUR tells a similar story of an innocent man accused of murder and chasing a bunch of insidious spies across the country. Barry Kane (Robert Cummings) is a simple factory worker in an airplane plant whose best friend is killed in a fire. It turns out the extinguisher Kane handed him was filled with gasoline, engulfing his friend in flames before burning the whole factory. An investigation points to Kane as the saboteur, forcing him to flee across the country to find the real fifth columnist. Along the way he meets Pat Martin (Priscilla Lane), the only one who believes his story. SABOTEUR is no doubt best remembered for its harrowing Statue of Liberty (actually a Universal backlot) finale, in which Cummings chases his man to the Lady's torch. Hitchcock had originally hoped to cast Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck in the leads, with Harry Carey, Sr., in the role of master spy Charles Tobin. leave a comment
