The first U.S. production to be filmed on-location in the Soviet Union, director Fred Schipisi and writer Tom Stoppard's gripping adaptation of John Le Carré's novel is a great thriller that inexplicably died at the box office. Why remains a mystery. Sean Connery is terrific as a British book editor who becomes embroiled in a bit of Cold War espionage when a beautful Russian woman (Michelle Pfeiffer) passes him an explosive manuscript.
