Lester (OLIVER! 1968) plays a 10-year-old boy who is psychosomatically mute. He becomes friendly with an ex-army colonel, Mills. The boy's parents, Jackson and Syms, have had no luck curing the boy, but Mills finds that the boy responds easily to a wild white colt. When the pony disappears from the moors, Mills has young Fullerton give her kestrel to Lester to befriend for a while. Lester almost kills the bird when he spots his horse and chases after it with the falcon tied to his arm. Mills retrieves the horse; but when Lester and Fullerton go riding the horse in a fog, the animal gets caught in a bog. Neither Mills nor Lester's parents can save the horse; it's only when the young boy speaks that the horse pulls itself out. An entertaining family film that is intelligently written and doesn't patronize its audience. leave a comment
