Three "hos" and a "hum" to this blatant attempt to cash in on the success of BOLERO, another Raft starrer. This time he's a half-Cuban dancer working in Havana with Adrian. They do a dance act, and he has plans to move up in the world before his strong legs are overtaken by varicose veins. Lombard is an heiress slumming in Cuba, and she comes to the club one night with some of her society pals. He thinks Lombard is a knockout, and, when he discovers that she has her own posh yacht, she becomes even more attractive. She stops to pay him a compliment on his dancing, which annoys hers escort, Owsley. The two men fight and Raft loses his job. He goes into the Cuban jungle and meets Margo, who teaches him the latest dance, the rumba. Raft gets a flash in his head, and thinks that this will be the next big craze. He soon opens his own Havana night spot, and his dancing with Margo packs the joint every night. Lombard returns and offers to back Raft in a New York opening. Then Raft gets a message saying that he'll be killed if he goes back to New York, because he allegedly once finked on an old gangster pal. Thomas owns the club where Raft will introduce his rumba with Margo, but the press is agog with the story that he'll be risking his life for his art if he shows up. Tossing caution to the wind, Raft and Margo go on stage in the jam-packed club. Margo buckles under all the pressure and faints, and, as Raft plans to do a solo, Lombard steps in and volunteers to be his new partner. The dance, which was choreographed by Veloz and Yolando, is a hit, and Lombard and Raft fall in love. Then it's learned that the whole thing was a publicity stunt devised by Raft's manager, Overman, though Raft and Margo never knew it. Veloz and Yolanda may be the only dance team ever to have two streets named after them. There is a corner in the San Fernando Valley of Veloz and Yolanda Streets where they lived for many years. Their daughter, Yolanda Veloz, didn't follow in their dance steps. She married Bernie Kopell of TV's "Love Boat" instead. In small roles as dancers, note Ann Sheridan and Jane Wyman. Wyman would marry a young Warner Brothers actor five years later, a man who made his name as "The Gipper" in KNUTE ROCKNE, ALL AMERICAN, and then gave up after playing the villain in the remake of THE KILLERS in order to do public service. And if you still haven't figured out who that is, we're not about to tell. Songs include: "I'm Yours for Tonight," "The Magic of You," "The Rhythm of the Rumba," "Your Eyes Have Said," and "If I Knew" (Ralph Rainger, Leo Robin). leave a comment
