RUDE

An unusual melodrama set in a largely black Canadian community. Three stories and countless subplots unfold in a Toronto housing project over Easter weekend: An unhappy young woman (Rachel Crawford) broods over a breakup; a boxer (Richard Chevolleau) comes to terms with his homosexuality; a drug dealer (Maurice Dean Wint) tries to patch things up with his wife (Melanie Nicholls-King), a rookie cop. Shot in intense, saturated color and art-directed with tremendous panache, the film holds its multiple narratives together through the device of pirate radio DJ Rude (Sharon M. Lewis), whose meditations on sex, drugs, race, class and violence are delivered in a voice that's equal parts smoke and Caribbean lilt. It's studied, to be sure. But it's also ambitious, defiantly poetic and a welcome antidote to the guns 'n' ghettos formula. leave a comment
