Often annoying, but ultimately fascinating, RUDE BOY focuses on Ray Gange, a young Londoner with no job, no prospects, and no hope. While drifting through a depressed Britain he gets a job as a roadie with a punk rock group, the Clash (playing themselves). He soon gets fired, starts to drink too much, and ends up back where he started--nowhere. An intriguing mixture of documentary, improvisation, and fiction, the film's aimless structure reflects the apathy that dominates Gange's existence. Among the film's highlights are actual concert performances by the Clash, arguably the best band to come out of the punk rock movement of the late 1970s. A surprisingly well-made film, RUDE BOY is hardly for all audiences, but a provocative experience for those willing to put up with the hopelessness. leave a comment
