A promising premise--60s hippies confronting 80s yuppies--goes badly awry in this comedy from directors Aaron Russo and Robert Greenwalt. Fred (Eric Roberts) and Jesus (Cheech Marin) are the hippies, who emerge from the underground after 20 years in Central America and confront their old cohorts (Louise Lasser, Julie Hagerty, and Robert Carradine), who have abandoned counterculture ideals in their scramble to come out first in the rat race of New York City, 1989. After a rocky start, the reunited friends set out to radicalize the 80s, with somewhat mixed results. RUDE AWAKENING has a real point to make about the nature (or lack) of commitment in our times, but it's buried under the rubble of so many bad gags, wildly overdrawn caricatures, lapses in logic, and aimless scenes that viewers aren't likely to care. Among the actors, only Eric Roberts is able to give a fully effective performance, as for once his over-the-top sensitivity is well-suited to the role of the touchy-feely hippie. Marin, who had taken a giant step away from his Cheech & Chong days with his rather gentle BORN IN EAST L.A. in 1987, here returns to his drug roots with a vengeance as a man who will ingest any substance on the off chance it might get him high. The film pays tribute to the '60s with brief appearances by icons of the era Timothy Leary, Bobby Seale, and Jerry Rubin as patrons of a trendy restaurant operated by Louise Lasser. leave a comment
