In addition to being a mechanical genius, Luke (David Arquette) enjoys a sideline as a luxury car thief. When American cops turn up the heat, Luke leaves his girlfriend-cum-partner Claudia (Famke Janssen) behind and flees to Europe where two unscrupulous tycoons are escalating their car wars. When boorish Mr. Biggerman (Kenneth Cranham) announces his unveiling of the RPM, a gas-less auto. Fearing his oil-selling profits will evaporate, rival magnate Chiarkos (Stephen Yardley) offers Luke a billion dollars to nab the RPM before it hits the assembly line. Luke accepts, but he's got two imposing obstacles: Chiarkos' seductive mistress Michelle (Emmanuelle Seigner) and Claudia who's determined to steal it first. In the thirties, a Fancy Car classic like TROUBLE IN PARADISE shimmered with elegance and innuendo as the criminal elite seduced each other with their felonies. In this low-class caper, thievery is fueled by sex. This unsexy star vehicle lacks invention, but what really makes it sputter is the lead in Arquette's performance. Just think: Would you send out Adam Sandler to do Cary Grant's job? leave a comment --Robert Pardi
