Roxanne

1987, Movie, PG, 107 mins

Unlike many of his comedic contemporaries, Steve Martin likes to take risks, and here those risks paid off big. Martin served as executive producer and wrote the screenplay for this modernization of Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac which stars Martin as C.D. Bales, the fire chief in a small northwestern town who happens to have a huge nose. C.D. has hired Chris McDonell (Rick Rossovich), a handsome dimwit who knows his way around hoses but not around women. Roxanne Kowalski (Daryl Hannah) is an astronomer who has rented a local house for the summer, and in scant moments we see that C.D. is mad about Roxanne. But Roxanne gets a look at Chris and falls for him, whereupon Chris asks C.D. for help in wooing her. Read the complete review for Roxanne

Was Apprentice's Lee Shortchanged?

So many things were wrong — atypically disorganized and surprisingly cursory, if you will — about the live results show for this latest round of NBC's The Apprentice. Where was the heated final boardroom battle? Why was the reunion aspect all but ignored? Who dares to disappoint Jaime Pressly? And why didn't Trump reveal the actual, quantifiable outcome of each final task? After the Donald decided to hire read more

Last Ladies Check Out of Apprentice

It was girls' night out — literally — on NBC's The Apprentice last week when Synergy's dressing of Embassy Suites staffers drew a sour reception from employees, leading the Donald to dispatch Allie Jablon and Roxanne Wilson, Season 5's remaining ladies. Did their culottes campaign get short shrift? Which of the guys has their votes to win this thing? And what was up with that lingering hug? TVGuide.com chatted up the runners-up.

TVGuide.com: Allie, were you sad to see your single-handed effort to resurrect culottes get thwarted?
Allie Jablon:
I thought they were really cute! This is the thing: We really took a lot of time to interview about 30 different housekeepers, and it w read more

Apprentice's Andrea Voted Off the Island

Actually, she was boated off the island (Ellis Island, that is). Or you could say that her "torch was snuffed", unlike Lady Liberty's. Whatever Survivor-like way you want to put it, NBC's The Apprentice (Mondays at 9 pm/ET) bid Andrea Lake adieu last week when Synergy churned out an Ellis Island brochure that was tired, poor and just shy of being wretched refuse. But why did the San Diego resident take the bullet for the bungling? In a chat with TVGuide.com, Andrea revealed the real reason her teammates loathed her so.

TVGuide.com: I've been doing these Apprentice interviews for years, and you're definitely the first sticker-company owner I've talked to.
Andrea Lake:
Well, look at that! I actually ow read more

The Apprentice Early on, it looked...

The ApprenticeEarly on, it looked to me like Synergy was cruisin' for a bruisin' in the cruise-ship-commercial challenge. Andrea clearly can't "play in the sandbox," as Roxanne put it. She was all offended by Roxanne's comments about her in the previous boardroom, and then she accuses Roxanne of not being able to handle someone being direct. Isn't that kind of a pot/kettle thing? (On a side note, Andrea's supposed to be a multimillionaire, yet she’s identified as a "Sticker Co. Owner." Does this make sense? That seems like a helluva lot of stickers.) I was glad when the Real Roxanne stood up for herself and demanded a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T, but I was also pretty sure her team was going to lose. That Synergy ad looked a little weak to me. Then again, how wa read more

Trump Talks Martha, Randall and Apprentice No. 5!

The Donald has spoken. "When you win the World Series, like we did with The Apprentice, you don't make too many changes," Donald Trump says on the eve of the NBC series' fifth edition. "The big change is always the cast." True, but there are some other surprises this time around. Premiering tonight at 9 pm/ET — in its new Monday time slot opposite 24 — Trump has called in some reinforcements, as he reveals in this TV Guide Q&A. TV Guide: I'm sure you're happy with the performance of last season's finale, because the ratings had been down a bit.Donald Trump: There was a lot of confusion with Martha [Stewart's edition of The Apprentice]. A lot of confus read more
