This back-road chiller turns a forsaken highway into a killing field. While on routine assignment on Route 66, Federal Agents Jack (Lou Diamond Phillips) and Stephanie (Lori Petty) apprehend Rabbit (Steven Williams), a mob snitch who's having second thoughts about testifying. Jack, who's mesmerized by this stretch of Southwestern roadway, starts having visions of an old-time chain gang. Agents P.T. (Dale Midkiff), Nick (Alex McArthur) and Mary (Mercedes Colon) arrive to provide backup, and not a moment too soon, since a Russian hit man has been sent to silence Rabbit. To ensure Rabbit's safety, the Feds spin off onto an abandoned branch of the main highway that was condemned and dubbed "Route 666" after several convicts were "accidentally killed" here in 1969. The roots of Jack's visions become clear: His dad was a bank-robber, and he was one of the convicts whose deaths were hushed up The others were homicidal killers. Literally hungry for company, the spirits of the slain criminals rise up through the concrete and make mincemeat of Nick and Mary. Unless Jack can find out how the convicts died, the ghostly vengeance-seekers who stalk Route 666 and thrive on human victims will not be appeased. Before Jack can lay the unquiet spirits to rest, he must confront the corrupt local lawmen who massacred them three decades earlier. If you've been waiting for George Romero to make "Night of the Living Dead Chain Gang," this is the movie for you. Though an excess of comic repartee and supernatural mumbo jumbo stall the suspense, it offers creepy butchery galore. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
