A long-winded, dull movie written by the woman who lived it--Louise Randall Pierson. In 1902, Todd is a determined 12-year-old girl who will never take no for an answer. When her father, Collins, dies, he leaves a small amount of money to take care of his wife, Lockhart, and their daughters, Todd and Cora Sue Collins. About six years later, the girl, now played by Russell, is going to a New Haven business school and planning a career for herself. She meets Woods, a Yale student who is very conservative. They soon marry and have several children, but Woods can't abide her vitality and independence, so he opts for the arms of a more traditional woman and a divorce occurs. Russell then meets the amiable Carson at a party. He is a happy-go-lucky type who has a history of gambling, but, once he encounters Russell, he decides to make a new life for himself and the woman he loves. More children arrive, and this marriage is successful and warm. They go from the heights to the depths, and each must take whatever employment comes along in order to support their increasing brood, but the closeness of the family conquers whatever financial difficulties arise. WW II begins, so they must send three of their sons off to fight. They have finally achieved a bit of prosperity as the picture concludes. The film runs almost two hours, far too long for the slim material. Curtiz, who had just come off MILDRED PIERCE, did what he could to put some humor and life into the script, but someone should have taken a sissors to the screenplay. Russell's character presages her later role as AUNTIE MAME (1958). The movie took four months to shoot, a longer period than most of the Warner Brothers films of the era. In small roles as the children, note Andrea King, Robert Hutton and Mona Freeman. Arthur Shields, Barry Fitzgerald's brother, plays a minister for the umpteenth time. He's been a man of the cloth so often he's just about eligible for sainthood. leave a comment
