Tennessee Williams wrote the play The Rose Tattoo for the great Italian actress Anna Magnani, but she turned it down. Five years later, she agreed to do it as a film, and the results were stunning. The film makes the most of Magnani's earthy looks and volatile temperament — she plays an Sicilian immigrant who reveres the memory of her dead husband but feels sexually attracted to a handsome banana hauler (Burt Lancaster) — and she was handed an Oscar for her absolutely riveting performance.
