Of all the Jeanette MacDonald-Nelson Eddy films, ROSE MARIE made the most money and is the best remembered. Grace Moore was to star but due to a schedule conflict, MacDonald, coming off her smash hit collaboration with Eddy, NAUGHTY MARIETTA, replaced her. As opera star Marie de Flor, she pleads with the Canadian priemer (Alan Mowbray) to release convicted bank robber John Flower (James Stewart, in his second film), but when he kills a man during a breakout, Marie leaves the opera (five acts of Charles Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette" amazingly compressed into roughly six minutes) and hires Boniface (George Regas), a half-breed guide, to take her into the wilderness in search of Flower. After Boniface double-crosses Marie, stealing all her money, she survives by becoming a saloon singer. Enter handsome Sgt. Bruce (Eddy) of the Mounties, whose mission it is to bring in Flower and who falls for the lovely Marie, then learns of her connection with the escapee. However, a Mountie always gets his man, and so does Sgt. Bruce, though by film's end he's also gotten his woman. A few laughs, excellent singing, and gorgeous photography all contribute to making this a must-see for Eddy-MacDonald fans. Her opening impersonation of a pampered prima donna is hilarious, an ample reminder of MacDonald's formidable if not always utilized comic talents. Although composer Rudolf Friml is always remembered for ROSE MARIE, it was actually MGM musical director Herbert Stothart who wrote many of the tunes. Under no circumstances confuse this offering, retitled INDIAN LOVE CALL for television showings, with the remake, which is inferior, despite its wide-screen, color treatment. leave a comment
