Inspired by an actual incident that took place during the Holocaust, THE ROSE GARDEN concerns a West German lawyer (Liv Ullmann) who takes the case of Aaron Reichenbach (Maximilian Schell) after he is brought to trial for physically attacking the elderly Arnold Krenn (Kurt Hubner) at the Hamburg airport. In defending Reichenbach, she learns of the massacre of a group of children during WW II by Krenn, a former SS commander who has been able to avoid being tried for his war crimes through a series of legal maneuvers. Working in English, Dutch director Fons Rademakers concentrates (as he did in THE ASSAULT) on presenting the Holocaust's continuing human toll. In this he is helped by Paul Hengge's thoughtful, well-crafted script, which keeps its focus on ideas without reducing the characters to mouthpieces. Ullmann gives a performance of passion and intelligence, Schell has rarely been better than he is here, and the supporting players are all persuasive, helping to make THE ROSE GARDEN a "message" film with enough drama to match its good intentions. leave a comment
