Rooster Cogburn

1975, Movie, PG, 107 mins

Ample proof that even an excellent cast can't save a faulty script, especially if it's a sequel to an Oscar-winner. John Wayne again plays the part of Rooster Cogburn, for which he took Best Actor accolades in TRUE GRIT six years earlier. The story picks up with Wayne having the chance to get his badge back, after another of his trigger-happy incidents. He must capture a gang of bandits, led by Jordan, who have hijacked a shipment of nitroglycerin. Making things tougher, albeit more colorful, is bible-toting Hepburn's insistence on joining him. She's upset because her preacher father was killed by the gang--a plot device and characterization that are more than reminiscent of THE AFRICAN QUEEN. A bitter disappointment, chiefly because director Millar didn't have the slightest idea of how to direct such big-name stars. The film's greatest significance lies in the fact that it was the last film produced by Hal Wallis. Wallis produced more than 100 films in his career, beginning with LITTLE CAESAR in 1931 and including such diverse films as 42ND STREET, SERGEANT YORK, CASABLANCA, BECKET, and many of the Elvis Presley films. leave a comment
