This warm-hearted comedy stars Cary Grant and Betsy Drake as Poppy and Anna Rose, middle-class parents of three children. Anna's generosity crowds the house when she agrees to take in withdrawn 13-year-old Jane (Iris Mann) for two weeks. Poppy balks at the idea, but consents at Anna's insistence, and by the end of the two weeks, Jane has become a permanent member of the household. Anna then hears of Jimmy-John (Clifford Tatum, Jr.), an emotionally scarred, lame boy who has only received abuse from previous foster parents. Through love and sincerity, Anna gains Jimmy-John's trust and also wins over Poppy, whose resistance to the new addition is overcome. ROOM FOR ONE MORE is based on the experiences of an actual couple, Poppy and Anna Perrott Rose, whose good deeds were recorded in a book by Anna. The story's authenticity was enhanced by the real-life marriage of Grant and Drake and their resulting on-screen rapport. Grant found a part not only for Drake in the film, but also for George "Foghorn" Winslow. He saw Winslow on Art Linkletter's "People Are Funny" show and quickly signed the boy who, at the tender age of five, gained fame and the nickname "Foghorn" for his basso profundo voice. The film's fond and honest treatment of children won special mention from the Venice International Film Festival. leave a comment
