Romy And Michele's High School Reunion

1997, Movie, R, 91 mins

A candy-colored, superficially fizzy revenge fantasy with a startlingly corrosive undercurrent of bitterness and frustration. A chance encounter in L.A. with high school classmate Heather Mooney (Janeane Garafolo) -- once an unhappy, foul-mouthed misfit, now a highly successful, foul-mouthed executive -- convinces lifelong fashion-forward friends Romy (Mira Sorvino) and Michele (Lisa Kudrow) to attend their 10-year reunion in Tucson, Arizona. Among the complications that await: the dismal ramifications of an ill-considered plan to pass themselves off as dressed-for-success power babes; Romy's unresolved crush on shallow teen heartthrob Billy Christianson (Vincent Ventresca); run-ins with the malicious, petty cheerleaders who've ripened into spiteful suburban matriarchs; and the uncanny power of miserable high school memories to erode the confidence of the most accomplished adult, let alone a pair of marginally employed, bubbleheaded party girls too old to be contestants on Singled Out. Underscored by the caustic truth that real life is just like high school (minus the light at the end of the four-year tunnel), this comedy of reprisal is -- in its own bubbly way -- even crueler than the similarly themed GROSSE POINTE BLANK, right up to the moment when the class nerd (Alan Cumming) turned deus ex helicopter alights and anoints Romy and Michele the goddesses they so adamantly believe they are. The nightmare sequence in which Michele flabbergasts a trio of pastel shrink-wrapped harpies (each with a color-coded daiquiri clutched in her well-manicured claws) by reciting the formula for glue is alone worth the price of admission. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
