In March 1980, El Salvador's liberal Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero was assassinated while performing mass for a group of nuns and patients in a hospital chapel. His killer, never apprehended, is believed to have been a member of a military right-wing death squad. ROMERO is an account of the last three years of the life of this man who has been called a modern-day saint in action, tracing Romero's conversion from a traditional to a liberation theology, his awakening to the injustice and violence rampant in his country, and his rise to prominence as a human-rights activist. Director John Duigan and screenwriter John Sacret Young take a simplified, economical approach to the story that delivers emotionally, and the obscenities of civil war are unflinchingly depicted. Most crucial to the film's success, however, is Raul Julia's sensitive, deeply moving performance as Romero. leave a comment
