Brynner is the Cossack captain who rules a village of Jewish peasants in Poland, none of whom is especially fond of the way they are ruled. Birkin returns from a school in France where she learned the politics of revolution and soon persuades her people to stand up to Brynner's oppressive
tactics. Polonsky's slow-moving direction and Brynner's lack of screen time hamper this well-intentioned picture.
