This picture grows better with age. Leigh was 48, and her husband, Olivier, had just left her for a younger woman. Beatty was 23, eager, ambitious, and sincerely wanting to change his image after SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS. Based on Tennessee Williams's only novel, the screenplay by Lambert became far more explicit in many ways than the subtle, short book.
